ABOUT THIS DESIGN Large Blue Butterfly caterpillars are known as brood parasites. In their caterpillar form, these butterflies resemble the larvae of the Myrmica ant. Using their resemblances, the caterpillars of this butterfly trick the ants into bringing it back to the ant nest. There, the caterpillar consumes the ant larvae or pretends to be a queen ant and feeds off of the nest's resources until it is time pupate and become a butterfly. Large Blue butterflies are not the only species of butterfly known to be brood parasites, but the behavior is very interesting. I created this pin after learning about its brood parasitic behavior.
